It was great to see so many friends and supporters at the walk including Michael Gold from Geron Nursing, Carolyn Haglund – the Director of the New Milford Senior Center, and long-time supporters to end Alzheimer’s, Ray and Marie Crawford. The people who participated ranged from infants to senior citizens and everyone was given a flower to commemorate the ways in which Alzheimer’s has touched their lives. A special thanks to Carol Lenz, Patricia Gibbs and Kathy Butler who were the top fundraisers.

In a country where over 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, the contributions of everyone who joined the walk will help make the future a more hopeful place for those with Alzheimer’s and those caring for loved ones who struggle with coping with this disease. Please take the time to consider adding your contribution or volunteering your time to end Alzheimer’s at http://newmilfordwalk.kintera.org.

Please give us a call if we can help you or your loved one through this difficult time through assistance with the sometimes daunting agencies and their procedural requirements or estate planning to protect the future.

The 2012 Award Ceremony for the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) Poster Contest was held on April 25th at the North Street Branch of Union Savings Bank. The purpose of the contest is to promote education and awareness for HRRA’s recycling programs. The students of each of the eleven municipalities served by HRRA were invited to submit posters supporting the theme of “How and What Do You Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.”

Each of the 44 Regional Winners who placed first, second or third was given a commemorative plaque and a check ranging from $50 to $250. Students who were recognized for Honorable Mention received a commemorative plaque and a gift. New this year, in addition to the awards to each of the individual winners, the Grand Prize Winner’s school receives a check for $1000 to support recycling and environmental education.

The presentation was attended by numerous First Selectmen and other elected officials. Attorney Buck-Taylor attended on behalf of Pat Murphy, the Mayor of New Milford. As Vice-Chair of the New Milford Town Council, Cecilia Buck-Taylor personally congratulated each of the ten New Milford winners and had the honor of presenting to each of them their plaques and gifts. Buck-Taylor was very grateful for being given this opportunity by Mayor Murphy to represent New Milford at this Awards Ceremony.

New Milford had much to be proud of at the Awards Ceremony. The New Milford Regional Winners and Honorable Mention recipients spanned school levels from Kindergarten to the 12th grade. Of the eleven municipalities, New Milford not only received the most awards but also had the Grand Prize Winner, Annie Moa, who is a senior at New Milford High School. As the Grand Prize Winner, Annie will have her poster mounted on two billboards in the area for one month, including one in New Milford on Route 7, north of Larsen Road.

Because of Annie Moa’s exceptional artwork as the Grand Prize winner, the New Milford High School was the first recipient of the $1000 award. Go New Milford!!!

Firearm Trusts – another service offered by The Law Office of Cecilia Buck-Taylor, P.C.

Many people experienced with firearms know that the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has regulations regarding making, transferring and registering firearms. This often includes submitting forms to ATF with your fingerprints and photo and having to obtain certification from your local law enforcement official.

A Firearm Trust can make transferring title to a firearm simpler and faster. Transfers to a Firearm Trust do not require certification from local law enforcement and do not require submitting fingerprints and photos to ATF. Added advantages of a trust are that the person establishing the trust can decide who will have control over the assets in the trust and how the assets are to be distributed.

Give us a call at 860-355-9191 if you would like more information.

On March 12, 2012, Attorney Buck-Taylor attended a conference on “Family Violence in Connecticut: Trauma, Trends and Triage.” The conference was held at the Quinnipiac University School of Law. Attending the conference were numerous family law practitioners, several judges, several State Representatives, Family Services personnel, mental health professionals and law enforcement personnel.

The conference was co-sponsored by the Connecticut Judicial Branch, the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Quinnipiac University School of Law. To paraphrase the program, policy makers, advocates, judges and national and state experts were brought together “to assess the status of domestic violence in Connecticut with an aim to offer systematic solutions.”

Presentations included an update on Connecticut’s response to family violence, both in the civil and the criminal court systems. Lethality assessment tools and the psychological impact of domestic violence trauma on all family members were reviewed by the experts. Resources available to those affected by domestic violence and practitioners were discussed as well as strategies for the successful representation of clients in this area.

The conference ended with an informed panel discussion as to how Connecticut can improve and strengthen its response to all of the victims of domestic violence and with a commitment to continue this dialogue on a regular basis.

A recent decision by the Connecticut Superior Court highlights a method for a divorced party to obtain information about an ex-spouse’s income in certain circumstances, by filing a petition for a bill of discovery. This case involved a divorce judgment where the defendant was ordered to pay alimony as a percentage of his gross income. Wachtel v. Lieberman (Owens, Howard T., J.T.R.) 52 Conn. Law Rptr. 513 (August 31, 2011). Years after the divorce, the plaintiff had probable cause to believe that the defendant was hiding income in order to pay less alimony. The defendant was a member of two LLCs, and the plaintiff petitioned for discovery of financial information as to the LLCs and to take the deposition of the defendant. The court found that the requests for discovery were reasonably necessary to a possible motion for contempt and granted the bill of discovery, so that the plaintiff could obtain more information about the defendant’s income.

This may be a good way to determine whether a motion for contempt may be successful before actually filing the contempt motion.
